Course Summary:

The Being a Highly Effective Governor course takes a two-part approach to generate a rapid growth of understanding about breadth and depth of governance, combined with practical methods to influence, monitor and evaluate the strategic development of the school, remaining focused on pupil outcomes and value for money.  Suitable for both new and experienced Governors, this course explores how to engage with the team in school, balancing your other commitments with this extremely important role.

Course objectives:

As a result of their participation on the course, Governors will:

• Have a refined awareness of the Principles contained within the Four Threads for School Improvement, and the associated Governor Behaviours.
• Self-evaluate accurately against the framework and action plan for their own further development, articulating their accountability and impact.
• Monitor and evaluate at a strategic level efficiently, developing capacity to provide constructive challenge and support to leaders at all levels to enable the school to function effectively.
• Feel well prepared for engaging in learning conversations with senior leaders.

Course outline:

Weeks 1-2

Introduction to the Four Threads materials, and the introduction of the principles of Professional Learning Conversations.

Weeks 3-4

Making use of the Leadership Thread, including planning challenge conversations, and exploring supporting leaders to plan for change and evaluate outcomes.

Weeks 5-6

Making use of the Learning and Teaching Thread, including how to understand effective leaders' evaluations of the quality of learning and teaching.

Weeks 7-8

Making use of the Curriculum Thread, including understanding the effectiveness of curriculum provision, and whether the outcomes indicate if implementation is robust.

Weeks 9-10

Making use of the Success for All Thread, including ensuring that the needs of individual pupils are at the heart of practice.

Weeks 11-12

Self-evaluation and development planning, including reflections on your overall effectiveness as a Governor.
