Getting Coaching Started

Developing a coaching culture in your school

When you commit to developing a coaching culture, you are showing your team that you trust them to take charge of their own development. Your belief in your team will build the trust, commitment and professional satistfaction needed for every member of the team  to be exceptional.

When your team are exceptional, the children are given every opportunity to be exceptional. It's a win-win.

Stage 1

Initial meeting with the Head and Senior Leaders to understand the make up the staff team, and for me to understand current teaching and learning development priorities. We will also plan for the first two coaching cycles.

Stage 2

Staff training - The principles of holding professional conversations. We explore the different types of professional conversation from direct instruction to coaching, the stages of a coaching conversation, and investigate the importance of language choices.

Stage 3

Support for the coaching groups through the first cycle. We work with each group ahead of their first set of coaching meetings to ensure that they feel prepared, and so that they understand how they will try to behave when they are being the coach.

Stage 4

Review meeting with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team where we evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the first cycle of meetings, and action plan for the second cycle.

Stage 5

Follow up meetings after the second and third cycles with the Headteacher and Senior Leadership Team to evaluate the impact of each cycle, and to identify any adaptations or amendments needed to make the process highly effective within the context of the individual school.
